I woke up today to a message from my brother-in-law saying “what’s up with that shirt half in/half out?” and I was like “what’s up about it?”. He finds my styling strange. And that kept me thinking, does it really look that strange? I don’t think so, it’s just a styling thing. You may like it, you may not. But I don’t think it’s a fashion mistake worth calling the fashion police.
And this morning interaction gave me an idea to write a post about police-worth fashion mistakes we all make. Because let’s be honest, even Anna Wintour must have a dark styling past. Or not.
WEARING THE WRONG SIZE
Fashion mistake number one for me is wearing the wrong size. And I’m guilty of this all the time. I like oversized things. But there are times that certain garments won’t look as good if they are not the right size for you. And there are clothes out there that are oversized already and by design. Which is much better and more flattering because they are made especially for that fit. If you buy 3 sizes too big, the look will be different because it will just look off.
Same goes for buying a way smaller size. No one looks good stuffed into a clothing garment. NO ONE. I think this one looks so much worse than sizing up.
REVEALING TOO MUCH
There are balance rules in the fashion world. If you are revealing too much on the top, cover the bottoms. If you’re showing your legs, cover the top. There’s a really fine line to overdoing this.
And there’s nothing wrong in wanting to look and feel sexy, but there’s a way to do this with taste.
TRYING TOO HARD
My style is very minimal so for me “trying too hard” starts with wearing a color I’m not used to. But I know not everyone is as boring as me. But even though my personal taste leans towards the simplistic side, I’m capable of admiring others great taste in clothes that I would never wear.
For me trying to hard is when someone tries to wear every trend at once. Or pushes one trend to its limit.
For example; leopard prints are hot this season. And even though I don’t like wearing animal prints. I love a total black look with leopard flats. Or maybe a white shirt and jeans with a leopard handbag. But trying too hard in this example would be wearing a leopard print dress, with leopard print boots, leopard print scarf, bag, iPhone case… You get the drill.
TRYING TOO LITTLE
Of all the fashion mistakes I’m guilty of, I think this one is the biggest one. Sometimes I find myself too comfortable in a certain type of clothes that it becomes extremely hard to step out of it.
I always dress for the occasion, don’t get me wrong. Even though I live in jeans I won’t show up at your wedding wearing them. But for example, I’m not used to wearing skirts or girly dresses. My style is very masculine. But I absolutely love the look of a midi pleated skirt with a chunky knit and white sneakers. ABSOLUTELY LOVE. And somehow I’m afraid of wearing it because I never wear skirts and I think I would look weird.
I need to work on this, I know.
There’s nothing, and let me say it again. NOTHING more embarrassing than wearing the wrong underwear for your outfit. Not because is under and hiding means you can get away with the first panties that come out of your drawer. This is a big fashion mistake. Nobody wants to walk around with visible panty lines.
However, I’m all for comfort so I don’t mean you have to wear the most uncomfortable underwear just for the sake of fashion. But nowadays are plenty of seamless options to choose from.
Same goes for bras. There are times where it’s really important to choose the right one. You will look better with that thin strapped blouse if you wear a strapless bra than showing 4 straps at once.
FALLING UNDER TRENDS AND PEER PRESSURE
“If it doesn’t look good in-store, it won’t look good outside of it” Sounds familiar? Well, it’s true. Stores are made for you to love everything you wear. Therefore is very true that if you don’t like how something looks in the store’s dressing room, you most certainly won’t like it outside of it.
The same goes for trends. Trends come and go at a pace hard keeping up with. But you don’t need to wear every single one of them. And don’t feel pressured to do so.
You just have to find your personal style, and use whatever trend you find will fit with it.
Doing otherwise is one of the biggest fashion mistakes I know because you will spend your money on something you may only wear once and never again.
NOT DRESSING FOR YOUR BODY TYPE
It will speak highly of you if you know your body and learn that not everything will look good on you.
There is nothing more empowering than seeing a woman comfortable in her own skin.
And I can assure you, you will feel the most confident women on Earth when you look your best. That’s why it’s very important to dress for your body type. Because it will make your best assets pop out and everything else go unannounced.
Of course, these fashion mistakes are based on my opinion. And you have to do whatever you want. I’m just sharing general thoughts. Tell me in the comments if you agree with these, and if you have some fashion mistakes of your own!
