I Started My Own Business

Guys, I started my own business.

Feels like ages ago, but in reality, I started this process in the middle of Decemeber of 2020.

I’m a very creative person and I’m always trying to learn something new. But one of my biggest weaknesses is that I get bored of everything really fast.

Not this time.

I’ve always wanted to start my own business and be my own boss. I kind of did when I started my own brand and I started creating content on this blog, on Instagram, and on my Youtube Channel. I make money with these platforms, so they are a business to me. But I felt the need to create a more traditional business and sell a product.

The Solution To A Problem

I really wanted to make a product that I had the possibility to develop myself at first, instead of mass-producing it. I’m not going to say that I’m a fragrance expert or anything of the sort. The answer is quite simple, I just love candles.

And the idea came in a split second. Candles were the perfect solution to my creative problem.

I could make the candles by hand and I could design the website from scratch. The design of the whole branding was also within my capabilities. I could take my own photos. And thanks to all that knowledge that I’ve acquired over the years, I didn’t have to outsource anything. Reducing the initial investment quite considerably.

The Creative Process

It was obvious to me that the general aesthetic had to be very minimal. That’s just my vibe and it has always been.

I also knew that I wanted to have a feel of lab-created + apothecary mix to the overall brand and packaging. And I wanted to make sure everything was vegan, eco-friendly, and non-toxic.

So now that I had the general concept of the brand. I felt the need to create a collection of candles to start with. Just to have a sense of direction and purpose and not just start with a couple of random scents.

I came up with the idea of starting a collection of four candles. Each candle would be named after an important city to me. And the scents won’t be obvious to that city. For example; Cancun – having a scent related to the beach/marine. That was a big NO to me.

I wanted to represent scents that reminded me of those cities or the memories I’ve made in them.

Now that I had a collection in mind, I could start designing. And I started with the design of each individual candle label.

That lead me to design the brand’s logo. And finally, I made the website.

Then I started doing research about how I wanted the packaging, and I decided glass amber jars + black lids were the way to go. Minimal, elegant and had that apothecary feel to them.

Testing

This step was the most important one. I wanted to make sure that my products were of very high quality.

I tested a couple of soy wax suppliers, fragrance oil suppliers, cotton wick suppliers, even glass jar suppliers.

But the testing only started there. I needed to test wax + fragrance combinations. Mixing temperatures. Pouring temperatures. I needed to test multiple wicks to make sure they were the correct size for the jar I was using. It was like playing chemistry class. And I absolutely loved it!

The Name

Rhea is best known as the mother of gods in Greek mythology. Her name means “to flow” “grounded”. And those meanings resonated with me. Not to mention the big wink to my own name; AndREA = REA = RHEA.

Candle Co. is just because it is a Candle Company 😛

When I had everything measured out perfectly and everything designed and ready. It was time to make the final photos. Finish up the website. Create social medias (Facebook and Instagram) and tweak some things here and there and wait for launch day. And just like that, I started my own business.

And that leads us to today. Let me introduce you to our first-ever candle collection;

City Collection

Behind the scents:

  • Barcelona: Creamy woody smell of freshly cut sandalwood. With a mix of soft floral accents.
  • Cancun: Sweet earthy patchouli scent with powdery musk accents.
  • Tokyo: Soft warm notes of vanilla with spicy tobacco leaf accents.
  • Paris: Sweet and delicate scent of fresh blooming gardenias.

Our candles are 120ml (4oz), made out of 100% soy wax and organic cotton wicks. They are vegan and eco-friendly to ensure a non-toxic burn. And of course, hand-made and hand-poured in Madrid, Spain.

Each candle retails at 14€. We ship internationally (shipping cost is calculated at checkout).

And that’s it. I started my own business. A dream come true!

The website officially launches tomorrow, January 3rd, 2021. Three is my favorite number so…

And I really hope you guys love them as much as I do. And I hope you’re able to get one for yourself or your loved ones.

PS: Bigger options (8oz) are coming soon, and also more collections with different scents!

Thank you for your support!

Love, A.
